Senate Primary Debate Snub Riles Neville

The Oregonian's Jeff Mapes reports that U.S. Senate Democratic primary candidate Candy Neville is upset with the City Club of Portland for choosing to invite only Steve Novick and Jeff Merkley to its April 4 debate.
Wade Fickler, interim executive director of the city club, said his group wanted to focus on candidates who actually have a chance of winning. "We've all been to debates where there are a lot of fringe candidates and you don't learn a lot about the people who might be elected," he said. He noted that the debate is aired on Oregon Public Broadcasting, and he'd prefer to use that valuable radio time quizzing Merkley and Novick in-depth.
Neville, Novick, Merkley, David Loera and Pavel Goberman participated in the March 7 debate at the Eugene City Club.

Prior to my protest, I contacted the Board via polite and respectful e-mail daily. Not one person from the City Club ever responded, contacted me, questioned me, deliberated, or discussed with me. They did absolutely no homework whatsoever.

I don't think the City Club fully realizes what they have done - actually found a legal method to skew an election by providing extensive and repeated t.v. and radio coverage for their personal picks. They did not pause to consider the impact of their action past their personal preferences.

The City Club of Portland owes an apology to women voters, minority voters, and all Oregon voters who believe they are capable of making up their own minds and setting their own criteria for voting.
